Depending who you talk to Newport is either a tourist town, a fishing town with a drinking problem, or a drinking town with a fishing problem.
Expect temperatures in the 60s, maybe 70. Wind can pick up in the later afternoon.
They have a nice 2 hour tour around the bay, out past the bridge (weather permitting), and up the river and back. They talk about the local wildlife and some of the commercial fishing boats. Bring a sweatshirt.

One of two lighthouses in Newport.
It is believed to be the oldest structure in Newport. It is also the only existing Oregon lighthouse with the living quarters attached, and the only historic wooden Oregon lighthouse still standing. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
South Beach
Situated next to the Yaquina Bay Bridge, South Beach State Park begins in south Newport and stretches several miles down the Oregon coast. This historic park offers access to miles of broad, sandy ocean beach and trails for walking and bicycling.

An escape room is a fully immersive live adventure game in which players of all ages can attempt to solve a series of puzzles and other challenges using clues, hints and strategy to complete the objectives at hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden within the room.
The Hatfield Marine Science Center is a distinguished marine laboratory located in Newport, Oregon.
Now in its 55th year of operation, Hatfield serves as Oregon State University’s coastal campus and as an oceanographic research base for six state and federal agencies. It is also a resource for K-12 educators and the public.
At Hatfield, we excel in student research opportunities and experiential instruction. We host a thriving summer internship program and offer an array of academic programs for students in community college through post-doc.
The trail starts in the northeast corner of the Hatfield Marine Science Center parking lot. It’s a short, level walk protected from the wind. It ends at the aquarium.
362 miles of some of the best scenery in the united states. It includes over 80 state parks. Sandy beaches, sandstone cliffs, rivers and bays, cities and towns are all connected by US Route 101.
Driving South
There are lots of spots to pull over that are not detailed below.
Lost coast rest area:
Nice overlook of the ocean with walk down to the beach. Not too steep and not too far.
Ona beach state park:
Nice state park with picnicking, restrooms, and creek leading into the ocean
Ocean Beaches Glassblowing & Gallery:
Very nice display from local artists of glass, metal work, and some paintings. Definitely worth stopping.
Guy has some amazing wood carvings and driftwood laying around that are really kind of cool. Only stopping one place? This is it!
Seal Rock State Recreation Site:
Large off-shore rock formations that provide habitat for seals, sea lions, sea birds and other marine life. Short trail down to beach and tidepools is steep in areas.
Driftwood beach:
Ocean Overlook parking area with restrooms and a bit of a walk down to the beach.
Waldport:
Cool bridge and bay.
Yachats:
Very cool small town with a brewery, the green salmon restaurant, and bread and Roses Bakery. Nice views of the ocean.
Very cool when the tide is coming in.
Cape Perpetua:
Nice visitor center with a pretty short trail under the highway to the overlook. You can also park at the overlook. Lots of other trails for the adventurous. You should also drive (walk?) up to the day use area. Very short walk from the parking lot to the west shelter. Awesome views.
Very cool lighthouse and keepers residence. After your visit drive a mile south to checkout the view of the lighthouse.
Cool, or you could walk the Newport bay front and see them on the rocks.
Driving North
Cool rock formation. Cliffside Coffee & Sweets for Coffee, ice cream and fudge.
Depoe Bay:
OPRD Whale Watching Center is a great place to view the bay. High tide and a bit of wide will spray water onto the roadway. Whale watching boat are available from the worlds smallest harbor. (Or you can view from shore)
Alder House Glass:
Very cool art glass studio where a number of artists take turns creating and showing their art. Very casual atmosphere. Nice and warm inside.
Chinook Winds Casino Resort:
It’s a casino, on the beach. Chinook’s seafood grill is a very nice restaurant separate from the casino.
